Start 2009 off on the “write” foot

28 12 2008

As a follow up to my Jewelry post the other day, I decided to see what was available for the writer’s side of my coin – and here are some great opportunities I ran across in my travels.  Think you want to get involved?  Simply follow the link(s) of your choice and you’re off!  Enjoy.

1.  Unique slant on a writing contest at Vote4MyStory.com and the main reason I’m including it here.  The premise of the site is to offer writers the opportunity to get their work noticed by offering opportunities for e-book and hardbound publications (hardbound is an eventual consideration once the site is further along).  This site just launched this month and offers up the chance for some writers to win – not only money but recognition.   The site has a few Entry fee levels from what I’ve read – I’m not altogether certain this site is going to garner a lot of traffic after people see the $24.95, $49.95 and $99 Entry fee requirements – but I’m all for seeing new enterprises succeed and hopefully this is indeed a win-win situation but only time will tell.

2. Seems like Amazon.com is in to a little bit of everything.  Last year they launched their Breakthrough Novel Award program which provides authors the opportunity to have their book published by Penguin Books!  This year as the 2009 Breakthrough Novel Award gets ready to launch for February, 2009, you can be certain there will be a  lot of interest in this particular contest.  This year the celebrity authors who will be involved in the judging include Sue Monk Kidd and Sue Grafton.  Several of last year’s authors have already received publishing contracts.  Wouldn’t you like to be one of them this year?  Well, then run, don’t walk over to Amazon.com’s site to get the low down on this terrific opportunity – hurry though because it launches in February with submissions being accepted from the 2-8th only!  I didn’t notice any indication that there was an Entry fee for this contest – although the winning authors are able to obtain a $25,000 advance on Royalties – just be certain to read the fine print for all contests you enter to be certain you are qualifying correctly.

3.  Let’s add a site that is filled with competitions – EGB Competitions Around the World for Everybody allows writers, artists, playwrights – anyone who is into anything creative – to enjoy a little bit of competitiveness.  Pages upon pages of competitions to enter and easy to navigate.

I’ll add a few more as I locate them – but another area you might be interested in viewing is an article regarding “Warnings” about writing contests provided by The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), what to look for and what to expect – some good pointers here that may help you out.

Stay tuned – more to come!
